Trump Administration Exempts These Electronics From Tariffs

In a reversal that could impact some of the world’s biggest tech brands, President Trump has carved out key electronics from his sweeping new reciprocal tariffs.

The Wall Street Journal reports that smartphones, laptops, memory chips, and other consumer electronics will be exempt from the latest round of tariffs targeting Chinese imports — easing fears of a sudden jump in prices on popular tech products.

Smartphones, laptops, memory chips, and other consumer electronics will be exempt from the latest round of tariffs targeting Chinese imports — easing fears of a sudden jump in prices on popular tech products.

According to new guidance released on Friday, April 11 by US Customs and Border Protection, machines used to make semiconductors, flat-screen TVs, tablets, and desktop computers are also excluded from both Trump’s 125 percent tariff on Chinese goods and the 10 percent baseline tariff applied to products from other countries.

The exemption could benefit major tech companies including Apple, Samsung, and Microsoft, all of which manufacture components overseas, according to The Wall Street Journal.
